HISTORY

In 1899, less than one generation removed from slavery, ten African American men and women were led by the Holy Spirit to establish a church where they could worship God in spirit and in truth.

We do not know if our founders were freedmen or came to Indian Territory during the land run of 1889. We do know they settled in what is known as North Tulsa and soon started meeting weekly to pray. From these meetings, the Macedonia Baptist Church was born in 1899–eight years before Oklahoma became the 46th state.

Since 1899, we have had many struggles, triumphs, defeats and victories. We have grown from five families meeting in a one-room structure with a wood burning stove, to more than 500 families at one point, to our current membership of over 300 families.

Our congregation now worships in a three-story building approximately one mile north of the original church. The current sanctuary has a seating capacity of 1,200, enabling us to host world-reknown personalities including Justice Thurgood Marshall, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rev Gardner C. Taylor, Mrs. Mary O. Ross, Mrs. Nannie H. Burroughhs, and Rev. Ralph J. Abernathy.
